New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans historic Lower Garden DistrictThe Lower Garden District is one of the most distinctive neighborhoods in New Orleans. Nestled upriver from the world-famous French Quarter and the Central Business District, the Lower Garden District offers old-world charm with lush parks, 200-year-old oak trees and a gumbo of architecture ranging from simple Creole Cottages to elaborate Greek Revival mansions.

The neighborhood features a blend of historic residences, eclectic shops and unique businesses. It is within easy walking distance of the Arts District, St. Charles Avenue, the Convention Center, and Magazine Street. In 2003 Utne Reader lauded the Lower Garden District as one of the hippest neighborhoods in North America.

Forty years ago the Lower Garden District was under siege by plans to build a second Mississippi River bridge through the heart of the neighborhood. In response, the residents banned together and formed the Coliseum Square Association to protect the historic fabric of a nearly 200-year-old neighborhood. The Coliseum Square Association has been instrumental in preserving the Lower Garden District, placing the neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places renovation of neighborhood parks and overseeing responsible zoning.
